Her name comes up at about eleven and you know from the time what kind of call it is going to be.
You answer. You have answered for four years. There was a stretch in the second year where you did not, twice, and you have never really got over how those two nights felt, so now you answer.
Everybody else stepped back around the same time, and they did it properly and thoughtfully and after a lot of agonizing. Two of them wrote to her. One of them still sends something at Christmas. Nobody was casual about it and nobody has said a bad word about her since.
You did not step back, and you cannot entirely explain why.
Two people said something this month. One is your sister and one is a friend who has done this longer than you have, and neither was unkind, and both used a version of the same sentence: that you are not helping her, and you are not helping yourself.
You did not have an answer. You said something about not being able to be the one who stops, and you heard how it sounded while you were saying it.
Eleven o'clock. Her name on the screen. And a question underneath the whole thing that you have never been able to get to the bottom of, which is whether this is love or whether it is a thing you cannot put down.

The chapter is a list of verbs, and two of them are yours
There is a line in the middle of the love chapter that people read as poetry and is actually a list of jobs.
Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.1 Corinthians 13:7
Bear. Believe. Hope. Endure. Four verbs, all of them active, none of them comfortable, and the first and the last are the two that describe eleven o'clock at night.
Beareth carries the sense of covering, of holding a weight up so it does not fall on somebody. Endureth is a soldier's word. It means staying under the load.
That is a description of what love does, and it is not a description of what love feels like, and Paul does not attach an outcome to any of the four.
You have been doing what Scripture says love does. I am not putting my own opinion over you here. Scripture says charity beareth all things and endureth all things, 1 Corinthians 13:7, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept that alive in a woman on the fourth year of eleven o'clock calls.
Your sister is not the enemy in this
Put this down before we go any further: she is not against you.
She has watched what four years has taken out of you. She said it carefully and after a lot of thought, and she said it knowing you would probably not take it well, which is what it costs a person to say a thing like that.
And the friend who has done this longer than you have is speaking from something. She is not theorizing. Scripture treats that kind of counsel as safety and not as opposition, Proverbs 11:14, and the Holy Spirit is as free to use her as a verse.
We are not going to make them into opponents. There is a version of this page that arms you against the two people most likely to catch you when this gets worse, and it would be an easy page to write and it would be a betrayal.
You have not been asked to choose between hearing them and loving her. Scripture says in the multitude of counselors there is safety, Proverbs 11:14, and the Holy Spirit is as likely to be speaking through a sister at a kitchen table as through a verse at eleven at night.
The part where I would tell you to change it
Now the honest half, because a page that only encourages you is no use to you at all.
If answering at eleven is costing you sleep you cannot spare, change when you answer. If she has taken money and you have given it, and the giving is going straight into the thing that is hurting her, stop giving it, and stop tonight. If there is any part of this where you are unsafe, that is not a question for a Christian article, it is a question for people who are trained for it.
Love is not obliged to hand over everything that is asked of it. Bearing a weight is not the same as being crushed by it, and Scripture nowhere says charity has no shape, 1 Corinthians 13:7, and the Holy Spirit is not asking you to be flattened in order to qualify as loving.
And here is the harder one. Are you still answering because you love her, or because you cannot bear to be the one who stopped?
If it is the second, that is not love, it is fear wearing love's coat, and it will exhaust you and it will not help her either. Say it out loud tonight and hand it to God.
You are not required to break yourself to prove anything. Scripture says a bruised reed shall he not break, Isaiah 42:3, and the Holy Spirit is not standing over you at eleven o'clock with a clipboard.
The part where I stand with you
And here is what I will not let stand.
You are not helping her is a claim about an outcome, and nobody in this story has that information.
Scripture puts the results of a work out of the worker's sight, 1 Corinthians 3:7, and the Holy Spirit has not published the ledger to anybody in this story. You do not know what four years of somebody answering has done. She does not know either. It is entirely possible that the only reason there is a person to ring anybody at eleven at night is that for four years somebody picked up.
Nobody can measure that. Not your sister, not the friend who has done this longer, not you.
You are not standing on results and you never were. Scripture says be not weary in well doing, Galatians 6:9, and the Holy Spirit does not read a friendship off a recovery timeline.
You have been asked a question you cannot answer, which is whether you are helping, and you have been trying to answer it at eleven at night while exhausted.
Scripture never handed anybody that instrument, Galatians 6:9, and the Holy Spirit does not settle a friendship by a recovery timeline. Put it down. Take up the one you can answer.
Are you answering out of love, or out of fear of being the one who stopped? If it is love, keep loving her, and change the shape of it wherever the shape is breaking you. If it is fear, hand that over tonight, because God is not asking you to hold a friendship together out of dread.
And then ring your sister and tell her you heard her. Not that she is right. That you heard her.
You are held whether you answer at eleven or ring back at eight in the morning. Scripture says charity beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things, 1 Corinthians 13:7, and the Holy Spirit has been in every one of those calls, including the two you did not take in the second year.
Those two nights are not held against you either.
Declare this over yourself
Speak these standing in Christ, under the will of God, with no date placed on Him, and never a word commanding another person's will. Scripture gives the standing and the Holy Spirit carries the words, and the outcome is His, and He may answer in His own way.
- Two years of everybody else's silence, you are not the measure of what love does. Scripture says charity bears all things and endures all things, and endures is a soldier's word for staying under a weight.
- Fear of being the one who stopped, get out of this house in the name of Jesus. Scripture says a bruised reed is not broken by Him, Isaiah 42:3, and the Holy Spirit has never once asked me to hold a friendship together out of dread.
- Lord, You are the God who bears and believes and hopes and endures, and nobody in this can measure what four years of answering has done. I am standing still in this room, and I am blessing her and ringing my sister to tell her I heard her.
