The Form Due Monday

He put the form on the table face up, which is how you knew he had already decided.

Coach leaves at seven. Bring a packed lunch. Payment due Monday, and a box at the bottom where the amount goes, printed in the same friendly font as everything else on the page.

He is nine. He told Yusuf at football. He has told his cousin. He has told the woman at the corner shop who asks him things and listens to the answers. He has already been on the trip four times in his head, and he came back from each one and told you about it.

You said, we will see.

He heard yes, because at nine we will see from a father who has never let him down sounds like yes with paperwork in front of it.

It is Thursday.

You counted after he went up. Then you counted again at the sink, which is where the second counting always happens, with the tap running so the sound of the house does not change. The number is the number. It was the number in October too, and it did not move then either.

The form is still on the table, face up, in the friendly font.

The verse everyone quotes, in the place it was written

There is a line people put on mugs, and Paul wrote it in a thank-you letter from a prison.

But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.Philippians 4:19

Look at who he says it to. The Philippians have just sent him something while he is in chains. They were not wealthy. Paul says in the same letter that he has learned to be full and to be hungry, to abound and to suffer need, and that he knows both. This is not a man promising a formula from a comfortable chair. It is a man in a cell saying my God supplies to people who had just gone without in order to send him something.

And notice what he does not say. He does not say God supplies all your want. He does not name an amount. He does not put a date on it. He says need, and he says according to His riches, which is a statement about the size of the One supplying and not a schedule for the supplying.

That distinction is going to matter at the sink on Thursday night. You are already known by God, down to the box at the bottom of that form. I am not putting my own confidence over you here. The word says He supplies according to His riches in glory, Philippians 4:19, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries a verse like that out of a mug and into a kitchen where the tap is running.

The number is not the wound

Here is the thing about a dated shortfall, and it is why this hurts more than a plain lack does.

The number itself is survivable. You have survived worse numbers. What you cannot carry is the face of a nine year old on Monday morning, and what you really cannot carry is the sentence that has been forming underneath all of it since October, which is that a father who cannot find this is a father who has failed at the one job.

Say that out loud once and look at it in the light, because it has been living in the dark where things grow. Scripture calls God a Father who pities His children, Psalm 103:13, and the Holy Spirit did not write that sentence at your sink.

It is not true. A shortfall is an arithmetic fact about a week. It has never once been a scorecard on a man, and there is no verse anywhere in Scripture where God reads a father's love off a bank balance.

You are not being weighed on that form. Scripture never hands a hurting man a bill for his own faith, and the Holy Spirit does not audit a father by what was in the tin on a Thursday. The word says God knows what things you have need of before you ask, Matthew 6:8, which means the need arrived in heaven before it arrived on your table.

What we do not do here, ever

I want to be plain with you about something, because this is the category where people get sold things.

Nobody on this page is going to tell you that a gift unlocks a supply. Nobody is going to tell you to send something somewhere and watch what happens. Nothing here costs anything, and nothing here ever will. Your breakthrough has no toll booth in front of it, and any voice that puts one there is not speaking for God.

Provision is met need. That is all it is and it is enormous. It is not increase, it is not a technique, and it is not a return on anything you did.

You have not been left to arrange this alone. The word says the eyes of the Lord are upon them that hope in His mercy, Psalm 33:18, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that near enough to lean on rather than a nice thing about God in general.

Bringing the actual figure

Vague prayer is where a specific need goes to get lost.

Paul told the Philippians to let their requests be made known unto God in everything, by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving. Everything is a wide word. It includes a box at the bottom of a school form.

So bring the figure. Not the feeling around the figure, the figure. Say the amount out loud to God. Say the date. Say the boy's name and the fact that he told Yusuf.

That is not lack of faith. It is the opposite of the shame that keeps a man vague in front of God because he is embarrassed at the size of what he is asking about. You are welcome in this conversation with the exact number in your hand. The word says to make your requests known unto God, Philippians 4:6, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a man past the embarrassment and gets the number said out loud.

And then, whatever happens, you will have brought it to Someone rather than counted it a third time at the sink.
