The Uniform List in August

It is on the fridge under the magnet from the seaside, and it has been there since the twelfth of July.

Two of everything. Shoes, and the shoes are the part. PE kit with the crest, which is the bit that costs, and a bag with the crest, and the note at the bottom saying items must be purchased through the approved supplier.

Term starts in two weeks.

There has been nothing spare since March. Not a crisis. Nothing you could point to and call an event. Just a slow year where everything went up a little and nothing came in to match it, and the small buffer that used to exist quietly stopped existing some time in the spring and you cannot say exactly when.

She has grown out of last year's. That is not negotiable, and it is not something you can be clever about.

You have not told anybody. Not your mum, who would find it somehow and then not eat properly for a fortnight. Not the school, because you have not been able to make yourself do that. Not your friend from the gate, who has said things this summer that make you fairly sure she is in a similar place and neither of you has ever gone first.

And underneath that there is a sentence forming that you have not looked at directly, which is that a mother who cannot cover a uniform list in August has failed at something fundamental.

Jesus picked birds with no storage

There is a line in Luke where Jesus reaches for the least impressive example He can find.

Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls?Luke 12:24

Ravens. Not eagles, not doves. Scavengers, and in the Levitical law unclean birds at that, and Jesus deliberately chooses them.

And the detail He picks out is the storehouse. No barn. No stock. Nothing set aside, which is exactly the situation on the fridge under the seaside magnet.

He does not say God feeds the ones with a barn. He says these have no storehouse and God feeds them, and then He argues upward: how much more.

You are not outside God's providing because nothing was set aside. I am not putting my own opinion over you here. Scripture says they have neither storehouse nor barn, and God feedeth them, Luke 12:24, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings that into a kitchen in August rather than leaving it a nice thought about birds.

The sentence forming behind the list

Let us look directly at the thing you have not looked at directly.

A mother who cannot cover a uniform list has failed at something fundamental. Scripture never wrote that line, Luke 12:24, and the Holy Spirit has not been the one repeating it in this kitchen.

That sentence is not from Scripture. It is not anywhere in the Bible in any form. It is a modern sentence, assembled out of a school's supplier arrangement and a slow year, and it has been given the authority of a verdict without ever being examined.

Where a family sits in a given August is a fact about a year. It has never once been a report on a parent's love, effort, or standing with God, and there is no verse anywhere that reads a thin summer that way.

You are not being weighed by that list. Scripture says like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear Him, for He knoweth our frame, Psalm 103:13-14, and the Holy Spirit does not read a household's worth off an approved supplier's price.

Nothing on this page costs anything

I want to be plain, because this is the category where people get sold things.

Nobody here is going to tell you that a gift releases a supply, or that there is an amount you can send somewhere that changes August. Nothing on this page has a toll booth in front of it and nothing ever will. Scripture never once put a price on receiving from God, Isaiah 55:1, and the Holy Spirit does not work a turnstile.

And there is no advice here about money. Not about the supplier, not about second hand, not about what you might have done differently in March. You know your own situation and you have thought about it far more than any stranger will.

The school, and your friend at the gate

Two practical things, and then I will stop.

The school. There is almost certainly a person whose job includes exactly this, and they have had this conversation many times this month, and the reason it is hard is not that they will judge you. It is that saying it out loud makes it real. That is the whole of it, and it is a real cost and it is smaller than the cost of the twelfth of September.

And your friend at the gate. You are fairly sure she is in a similar place. One of you goes first, and it does not have to be a confession, it can be one sentence about how August is going.

You have not been asked to carry this on your own. Scripture says bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ, Galatians 6:2, and the Holy Spirit has moved through one parent saying one honest sentence at a school gate far more often than through anything dramatic.
