The Notice With Tuesday On It

It is on the shelf behind the tin, face down, which is a thing you did without deciding to.

Red print. That is the whole of what makes it different from the last one, and it is a small design decision made by somebody in an office who has never met you, and it has been doing something to your chest since Thursday.

There is a date on it. Tuesday.

You have read it four times. Once standing at the door with your coat still on. Once at the table properly, with a pen, because you thought you might find something in it that you had missed. Twice since then for no reason at all, which is the reading that does the damage, the reading that is not for information.

The children do not know. There is nothing for them to know yet and there may be nothing to know at all, and you have got very good at the voice you use when somebody asks if everything is all right.

You prayed about it on Thursday night. Sort of. You said, Lord, You see this, and then you did not know what else to put after it, because what came next in your head was an amount, and saying an amount out loud to God felt like something you were not sure you were allowed to do.

So it is on the shelf behind the tin, face down, with a Tuesday on it.

The psalm was written for the middle of the trouble

There is a line at the top of Psalm 46 that people put on cards and it belongs in a crisis.

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea.Psalm 46:1-2

A very present help. Not a help that arrives afterwards, when the situation has resolved and everybody is calm again. Present, in the trouble, while the mountains are still in the sea.

And notice that the psalmist does not talk himself out of the size of the problem. He leaves the earth being removed right there in the sentence. He does not shrink the trouble in order to make God bigger, because he does not need to.

You are not waiting for God to become relevant to this on Tuesday. I am not putting my own opinion over you here. Scripture says God is a very present help in trouble, Psalm 46:1, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes present mean the kitchen you are standing in on Thursday night.

Say the amount out loud

You stopped at Lord, You see this. Let us go one sentence further, and let me say why it matters.

There is a shame that fastens itself to a small dated bill, and it is heavier than the shame that comes with a large disaster. A woman will pray about a hospital appointment without hesitating and go quiet about an electricity notice, because an electricity notice feels like a thing she should have handled.

That is not reverence. That is shame in a Sunday coat, and it keeps a person vague in front of God at exactly the moment she needs to be specific.

Jesus taught people to pray for bread. Today's bread. The plainest domestic supply there is, and He put it in the middle of the prayer He gave everybody, between the kingdom coming and forgiveness, without a word of apology attached.

You are welcome in this conversation with the exact figure in your hand. Scripture says be careful for nothing, but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God, Philippians 4:6, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gets a woman past the embarrassment far enough to say a number in her own kitchen.

Nothing on this page costs anything

I want to be plain, because this is where people get sold things.

Nobody here is going to tell you that a gift unlocks a supply, or that there is a sum you can send somewhere that moves this. There is no toll booth in front of your breakthrough and there never will be on this page. If a voice ever puts one there, that voice is not carrying Scripture.

And I am not going to give you advice. Not about the bill, not about the account, not about who you should ring. You have counted four times and you know your own situation better than any stranger ever will.

You have not been left to arrange this by yourself. Scripture says the Lord of hosts is with us, the God of Jacob is our refuge, Psalm 46:7, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a thing to lean weight on rather than a nice sentence about God.

What the red print is actually claiming

Here is the part that matters more than Tuesday.

Red print is a design choice. Somebody chose it because it works, and what it works on is not your electricity supply, it is your nervous system. It is built to produce urgency and it has been producing something else in you since Thursday, which is a verdict.

The notice says an amount and a date. That is all the information it contains. It does not say you are careless. It does not say God has withdrawn. It does not say a woman in your position has failed her children.

You have been reading four sentences and hearing forty. Scripture wrote none of the other thirty-six, Psalm 46:7, and the Holy Spirit has not been reading them over you either.

You are not being weighed by that piece of paper. Scripture says God is our refuge, a very present help, Psalm 46:1, and the Holy Spirit does not read a household's worth off a red-printed final notice.
