Rent Is FridayPsalm 23:1

The Letter About the Rent

This message is for The rent goes up on the first of next month, there are six of us at this table, and I have gone through the figures four times and they do not reach.

It came on Thursday and you read it in the hall and then you folded it in half and put it in the inside pocket of your jacket, which is where you put things you are not ready for anybody to find.

The first of next month. A figure. A paragraph about market rates that has clearly been sent to a great many people.

Six of you at that table. Your mother has the chair by the window because of the draught. The youngest two share, and they are getting to an age where that is becoming a subject.

You went through it four times. Thursday night at the table after everyone went up, Friday on your break, Saturday morning, and again on Sunday, which was the one where you did not really need the numbers because you had them by heart, and were only looking at them to see whether they had done anything different.

They had not.

Nobody knows. Your wife knows something, because thirty years teaches a person to read a jacket pocket without opening it, and she has not asked, and you know she is waiting for you to bring it.

And the thing that has been running underneath it all weekend is not the figure. It is a sentence that is trying to attach itself, which is that a man at this table with a letter in his pocket has failed the six people sitting at it.

The Letter About the Rent

The psalm is one relationship and one consequence

There is a first line everybody knows and the second half of it is doing all the work.

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.Psalm 23:1

Two clauses. The first is a relationship and the second is what follows from it, and the order matters enormously.

David does not say I shall not want because I have arranged things well. He does not say it because the market is kind or the figures reach. The whole weight of the second clause rests on the first, and the first is not about him at all.

And a shepherd, in that world, is not a benefactor who sends things. He walks with the flock. He goes ahead of them into the bad ground. He is present.

You are not the shepherd of this household, and you never were. I am not putting my own idea over you here. Scripture says the Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want, Psalm 23:1, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a weight-bearing thing for a man sitting at a table at midnight rather than a line on a card.

You are the father. That is a real and honorable office and it is not the same office, and the two have quietly merged in your chest since Thursday.

The sentence trying to attach itself

Let us look straight at it.

A man at this table with a letter in his pocket has failed the six people sitting at it.

That sentence is not in Scripture. It is not anywhere in the Bible in any form. It is assembled out of a landlord's decision and a market and a paragraph about rates, and it has been given the authority of a verdict without ever being examined.

Where a household sits when a rent letter arrives is a fact about a month. It has never once been a report on a father's love, effort, or standing with God.

You are not being weighed on the first of next month. Scripture says like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear Him, for He knoweth our frame, Psalm 103:13-14, and the Holy Spirit does not read a man's worth off a paragraph about market rates.

Nothing on this page costs anything

I want to be plain, because this is where people get sold things.

Nobody here is going to tell you that a gift releases a supply, or that there is a sum you can send somewhere that moves a landlord. There is no toll booth in front of your breakthrough and there never will be on this page. Scripture never once put a price on receiving from God, Isaiah 55:1, and the Holy Spirit does not work a turnstile.

And there is no advice here about money, housing, or what to do about the two who share. You know your own table and you have done the figures four times.

The jacket pocket, and your wife

One practical thing, and it is the only one.

Take it out of the pocket and put it on the table tonight when everyone has gone up.

Not with a plan attached. Not with the solution worked out first, which is what you have been waiting for and which is why it has been in a jacket since Thursday. Just the letter, on the table, and the sentence this came and I have been carrying it since Thursday.

She has been waiting for that since about Friday lunchtime. Scripture never required a man to arrive with a solution before he was allowed to speak, Psalm 62:8, and the Holy Spirit has been nudging that jacket pocket all weekend.

You have not been asked to solve it before you are allowed to say it. Scripture says two are better than one, for if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow, Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, and the Holy Spirit has been running that arrangement in your house for thirty years whether or not either of you named it.

The breakthrough

You have been carrying two things and they have welded together in an inside pocket. There is a rent increase with a date on it, and there is a verdict on the kind of man you are.

Only the first one is real. Put the second one down, because Scripture never printed it, Psalm 23:1, and the Holy Spirit did not supply it in a hallway on a Thursday.

Not because the first of the month is solved. I do not know how it goes and nobody who tells you they do is telling you the truth. What I know is that a paragraph about market rates was never handed the authority to grade a father, and that the second clause of that psalm has never once rested on a man's own arithmetic.

You are seen, and this need is known, and it was known before Thursday. Scripture says the Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want, Psalm 23:1, and the Holy Spirit brought this household into that sentence long before a letter came through the door.

So take it out of the jacket. Put it on the table. Say the figure out loud to God and then say it out loud to your wife.

The first of the month will come, and you will not be meeting it on your own.

Declare this over yourself

Speak these standing in Christ, under the will of God, with no date placed on Him. Scripture gives the standing and the Holy Spirit carries the words, and the outcome is His, and He may answer in His own way.

  1. First of next month, you are a date on a letter and not the head of this house. Scripture says the Lord is my shepherd and I shall not want, and the second half of that sentence has never once rested on my arithmetic.
  2. Sentence that has been trying to attach itself since Thursday, that a man with a letter in his pocket has failed the six people at his table, get out of this house in the name of Jesus. Scripture says the Lord pities His children and knows our frame, Psalm 103:13-14, and the Holy Spirit has never said it once.
  3. Lord, You are the Shepherd who goes ahead into the bad ground, and this table was in that psalm before the letter came. I am taking it out of my jacket tonight and putting it on the table, and I am saying the figure out loud to her.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
