The heat gets you at the top of the stairs, before you have seen anything at all. Chlorine and wet concrete and that thick soft air a swimming pool makes, and then the long window, fogged along the bottom where the little ones press their hands, and a whistle going somewhere down in the water.
Eight parents on a bench that is bolted to the floor. Coats on laps, because there is nowhere on this earth to put a coat in a viewing gallery. A woman two along is peeling the paper off a cereal bar for a smaller child who has already said no to it twice. Somebody's phone goes and gets silenced fast. Down in the shallow end a line of six year olds are being taught to blow bubbles, and one of them keeps lifting his head too early, and that one is his, and he lifts a hand off his knee to wave.
The woman beside him he has sat next to every Tuesday since September. They have covered the parking. They have covered the water being cold last week. And then, because it is simply the thing people say, and because she means nothing whatsoever by it, she turns and asks.
"And what is it you do?"
He gives her the shortest true sentence he has. "I'm between things at the moment."
She says oh, that is not the worst place to be, and she smiles, and her own child surfaces too early as well and she leans forward and knocks lightly on the glass. Four seconds, the whole exchange. She has not thought about it since and she never will.
He thought about it in the car park. He thought about it hanging the wet towels over the bath. He was still thinking about it on Wednesday.
And you know exactly why, because you have your own Tuesday. Forty applications. Two replies. Neither one of them was a yes. Somebody asked you a small kind question in a room with people in it, and it went straight past every one of them and landed on you, and you have carried it all week, and the woman who handed it to you does not even know she handed you anything.

She said do, and somewhere in you it landed as am
Beloved, let me name the weight first, because I am not going to lift anything off you that I have not first said out loud and honored.
The weight is not the four seconds. You are not fragile and you did not misread her. The weight is this: somewhere in these months, quietly, without a single decision being made, the question what do you do stopped being a question about your week and became a question about your worth. Nobody did that to you. Not her, not the two who replied, not the thirty eight who did not. You did the filing yourself, in the dark, the way we all do it, one small unanswered morning at a time. Scripture holds that ground in Ephesians 2:10, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it into a room like this one.
And we should be honest about how reasonable it felt. Work is where most of us are handed a word for ourselves. Take the word away and the sentence has a hole in it, and a person standing in a room full of people with a hole in their sentence will reach for whatever word is nearest. The nearest word was between. And between is a perfectly good description of a diary. It is a terrible description of a soul, and it has been walking around all week wearing your name.
So let me put the true sentence next to it. Not to make you feel better. Because it is true, and truth carries better than comfort does.
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.Ephesians 2:10
Sit with the first word for a moment. Workmanship. The word underneath it in the Greek is the one our word poem comes down from. Something made on purpose, by somebody who was paying attention, where every part of it is there because it was put there. That is what the Word calls you. Not a role. Not a title on a lanyard. A made thing, made in Christ Jesus, and nobody who has ever read your name at the top of an application has had the first idea what they were reading.
Now look at what He does with the work itself, because this is the part that turns the room around.
Which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. Before. The preparing happened first. The good works were made ready ahead of you, ahead of the search, ahead of the September you started counting from. And the verb He gives you for them is not find, and it is not win, and it is not be selected for. It is walk. Which is a thing you do today, in the shoes you already own.
So hear what I am actually saying to you, and hear the whole of it. You brought a six year old to a swimming lesson in the rain on a Tuesday. You sat in the heat and you waved when he came up too early. That is not a thing you did to fill a gap between the real things. You were walking in something He prepared. The place you have been calling between is a place He furnished before you got there. This rests on Scripture in Ephesians 2:10, and on the Holy Spirit who makes what is written a living thing.
And I know what rises next, because it rises in every honest heart at exactly this point. That is a lovely thing to say to somebody who has something to show for their week.
Then read the two sentences that come immediately before it, beloved, because Paul answered you before you asked.
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.
Watch what he does, and then watch what he does next. In those two verses he takes works completely away from the question of where you stand. Not reduced. Not weighted. Removed, so that no human being anywhere can ever stand on the strength of what they produced. And then, one sentence later, he hands the works straight back to you, in a completely different place. Not underneath you, as the ground you are standing on. Out in front of you, as the road you are walking on. Scripture already said it in Ephesians 2:10, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing the work, not the sentence.
That is the architecture of it, and it is the mercy of God in the shape of a sentence. What you are was never manufactured by what you do. Which is exactly why forty silences cannot lift a single ounce of it off you. They were never carrying it. They could not have carried it. It was a gift before any of those doors existed, and it is a gift this afternoon in the heat of a viewing gallery. Scripture settles that in Ephesians 2:10, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it rather than these words.
And do not let anyone tell you He finished acting a long time ago and left us the stories. He is moving now, this week, in ordinary houses on ordinary streets, and He is not saving it up for a better class of person than the one holding this. Christ is in you. On the bench. In the car park. In the bathroom with the wet towels over your arm.
Something is being handed to you in this hour, and it is not a reply and it is not a date.
It is your own word back.
Understand what actually happened, because it matters that you see it clearly. That woman on the bench never held anything of yours. She asked, she smiled, she knocked on the glass, she went home. The word only had weight because you were the one carrying it, and a thing you are carrying is a thing you can set down. I am not putting my own idea over you; Scripture says it in Ephesians 2:10, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it live.
You are in Christ and Christ is in you. That is not a comfort I am offering you, it is a standing you already have, and it did not arrive with a job and it does not leave with one. Jesus said that faith the size of a mustard seed, spoken to the mountain, is enough. He did not say beg the mountain and He did not say wait until you feel qualified to address it. He said speak. That is not my opinion. Scripture stands behind it in Ephesians 2:10, and the Holy Spirit brings it near.
And the mountain in this room is not the door. The mountain is one small ordinary word that got promoted to a name while you were not looking. Speak to that. Scripture holds that ground in Ephesians 2:10, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it into a room like this one.
Declare this over yourself
Say it out loud, standing there, with your hand where it is. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to name what you are was given to you and it is not any room's to issue or withdraw. You do not need a larger faith than the one already in your hand. Jesus put the measure at the smallest thing a hand can hold and the instruction in a single verb, speak, and the mountain under your hand is a word you let become a name. Speak to it once, clearly, and then take your hand off the door and go and live your Thursday. What He does on the other side of that wood is His to decide, and however He answers, the road under your feet today was laid before you got here. This rests on Scripture in Ephesians 2:10, and on the Holy Spirit who makes what is written a living thing.
- Door under my hand, you hold a room and you do not hold my name, and I say so in the name of Jesus. The Word of God says I am His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works He made ready beforehand, so what I am was settled in a workshop, and no hiring room on this earth holds the key to it.
- This day, you are not empty and I am kept in you, because Scripture says God prepared good works beforehand, Ephesians 2:10, and the Holy Spirit has never once needed a job title to carry them. God, You are my Maker and my Provider, and I thank You, because what You handed me by grace was never mine to earn and is not any silent inbox's to take back.
- Jesus, You are the One who prepares, and "between" is only a word about a diary with no say over my name. The good works You made ready beforehand are the road under my feet today. I thank You because You settled what I am long before the first application ever went out.
