The Closed DoorIsaiah 46:4

The Box Where the Year Goes

This message is for I was made redundant at fifty-four, and somewhere in the last eleven months I quietly started leaving my year of birth off forms, and now I cannot stop noticing that I do it.

You noticed it on Tuesday, which is eleven months later than you started doing it.

The form asked for a date of birth. There is a small box, three fields, day and month and year, and your cursor sat in the third one for about four seconds and then went past it to the next section, and you filled in everything else and read it back twice and only saw the gap because the page went red.

Eleven months. Somewhere in there, without deciding, you began managing your own age.

You are fifty-four. That is not a secret. It is on a passport in a drawer and it is on your face in the good way, the way that means you have laughed a lot, and it is in twenty-nine years of a trade you were good at and are still good at.

But the box went red and you sat back in the chair and looked at it for a while, and what you were actually looking at was the thing you have been believing since March without ever putting it into words. That the years are now the problem. That the very thing you spent them acquiring has been reclassified as a liability by people who have not met you.

Twenty-nine years, folded into three digits, left blank on purpose.

The Box Where the Year Goes

God speaks about the far end of a life

There is a verse in Isaiah where God says something almost nobody says out loud.

And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.Isaiah 46:4

Read the verbs. Made, bear, carry, deliver. Four of them and every one belongs to God, and the man in the sentence is not doing anything except being carried.

And notice the direction of it. This is not a promise about a young man's strength. It is aimed precisely at the end of the arc, at the part of a life the world has always been quietly embarrassed about, and God says I am he there as much as anywhere.

That is worth landing on before we go any further. You are carried at fifty-four by the same God who carried you at twenty-four. I am not offering you my own encouragement. Scripture puts the carrying at the far end of the life on purpose, Isaiah 46:4, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that land in a chair in front of a form that has gone red.

No advice on this page

I am not going to tell you anything about the search. Not one word.

I do not know your trade, your market, or the eleven months you have already spent inside it. Anyone who has not sat in that chair has no standing to suggest an approach, and there is a particular cruelty in implying that a better technique would have opened a door by now.

So there is nothing here about how to write it, where to look, or who to speak to. There is no suggestion anywhere in this that you have done this wrong, because Scripture does not read a shut door as a report on the one knocking, Isaiah 46:4, and the Holy Spirit has never handed a tired man a technique instead of a presence.

What there is instead is a plain refusal to let eleven months read as a report on you. You have not been overlooked by God, whatever the market has decided this year. Scripture says the Lord taketh pleasure in them that fear Him, in those that hope in His mercy, Psalm 147:11, and the Holy Spirit is present in that chair at the same strength He would be in any office that never replied.

What the empty box was actually doing

Here is the part that matters more than the forms.

Leaving the year out was not a tactic. If it were a tactic you would have decided it, and you did not decide it, and that is exactly why it deserves a look. Something in you concluded, quietly, that the safest version of yourself is the one with a piece missing.

That is a small agreement with a lie, made in a chair, on an ordinary Tuesday, eleven months ago.

It is not a moral failure and I am not scolding you for it. A man under sustained rejection will start protecting the soft parts, and this is what that looks like when the soft part is a number.

But it needs saying out loud so it can be put down. You are not a safer man with a piece of your life left out. Scripture says the hoary head is a crown of glory, Proverbs 16:31, and the Holy Spirit does not require a man to redact himself before He will use him.

Twenty-nine years is not a liability. It is the reason you can look at a job and know in the first ten minutes what it will cost, which is a thing no one under thirty can do and no form has a box for.

Provision now, and the door later

Two things are true at once and the closed door keeps merging them.

There is work you are made for that has not arrived, and there is today, which has been provided for in some way, however thin, however far from what you would have chosen.

I am not going to call the second the answer to the first. It is not. Eleven months of this is not a plan you have been given, and I am not going to dress it up as one. Scripture is willing to say daily bread and stop there, Matthew 6:11, and the Holy Spirit does not need a thin year explained before He will be in it.

But God has fed a household through eleven months of no, and He did it without a single yes arriving. That is not nothing, and it is not luck. You are provided for while the door is shut. Scripture says He gives to all life and breath and all things, Acts 17:25, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a man hold that and his disappointment at once without either of them becoming a lie.

The breakthrough

You have been letting a hiring market tell you what your years are worth, and a market is not qualified to say.

The thing to put down today is not the applications. Keep applying. Put down the private edit, the one where you leave a piece of yourself off a page so the page will be kinder to you. Scripture calls those years a crown, Proverbs 16:31, and the Holy Spirit did not suggest the edit.

Fill the box in. All three fields. Not as a strategy, because it is not one, and not because it will change an outcome, because it may not. Fill it in because the man who fills it in is the man God has been carrying since before he could walk, and that man does not need to arrive anywhere redacted.

You are the same man on Tuesday that you were at twenty-nine, and God has carried both of them. Scripture says I have made, and I will bear, even I will carry, and will deliver you, Isaiah 46:4, and the Holy Spirit is the one who settles that over a man in front of a screen that has gone red.

Nothing here is a prediction about the search. I do not know when a door opens. What I know is that the God who made you is still the one carrying you, and that no form was ever given the authority to reduce a life to a liability.

Declare this over yourself

Speak these standing in Christ, under the will of God, with no date placed on Him. Scripture gives the standing and the Holy Spirit carries the words, and the outcome is His, and He may answer in His own way.

  1. Empty box where the year goes, you are not a thing I have to hide. Scripture says God carries His people even to hoar hairs, and twenty-nine years is a crown and not a liability.
  2. Agreement I made in a chair eleven months ago, that the safest version of me is the one with a piece missing, get out of this house in the name of Jesus. Scripture says the hoary head is a crown of glory, Proverbs 16:31, and the Holy Spirit has never once asked me to redact myself before He would use me.
  3. Lord, You are the God who made and bears and carries and delivers, and every one of those verbs is Yours. I am filling the box in today, all three fields, and I am leaving the door with You.
