The Final Two, Twice

The second call came at ten past four on a Thursday and you knew from the first three words, because people who are about to give you good news do not start with your name.

Final two. Both times.

The first one, in March, you handled well. You were genuinely all right about it. You had been one of two, which is a good sign, and you said so to people, and you meant it, and you went for the next thing.

The second one was last week.

And what has happened since is not proportionate to a job, and you know it is not, and knowing that has not helped.

Forty rejections would not have done this. Forty rejections is weather. It is a market, it is volume, it is somebody's filter, and none of it comes near you.

The final two is different. Somebody sat in a room with you for an hour. Somebody read the whole thing properly. Two people, weighed carefully, by somebody who had all the information and was not rushing.

And it was not you. Twice.

That is not weather. That feels like a considered opinion, delivered twice, by people who looked closely.

The verse leaves the devising with you and the steps with Him

There is a proverb that most people read as a rebuke and is actually a division of labor.

A man's heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.Proverbs 16:9

Notice that the devising is not criticized. The man plans, and the proverb does not say he was wrong to, or presumptuous, or lacking in faith. Planning is what a person does and Scripture is entirely relaxed about it.

What it does is name who is doing the directing.

And directeth is not the same as deniest. The proverb is not describing a God who blocks people. It describes steps being set, which is an active and forward-moving word, and it is used about a man who is walking rather than a man who is stuck.

You are being directed, not turned down. I am not putting my own idea over you here. Scripture says the Lord directeth his steps, Proverbs 16:9, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a thing a person can rest on at ten past four on a Thursday.

Why the near miss does the damage

Here is the mechanism, and naming it will not fix it but it will stop it spreading.

A flat rejection carries almost no information about you, and your mind knows that.

A near miss carries what feels like a great deal. Somebody assessed you thoroughly, at length, with everything in front of them, against exactly one other person, and chose the other one. The comparison is narrow enough that the mind cannot dismiss it, so it converts it into a fact about your worth.

But it is not that fact. A final two is decided by things nobody tells you and frequently by things nobody could tell you: a team's shape, a gap somebody needs filling, an internal candidate who was always slightly ahead, a preference that would embarrass a panel to write down.

You will never know. That is genuinely the hardest part and I am not going to pretend otherwise.

You are not what a room of two decided twice. Scripture says the Lord seeth not as man seeth, for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart, 1 Samuel 16:7, and the Holy Spirit does not revise His view of a person on the basis of a comparison nobody explained.

Nothing here is advice

Not one word of this is about the applications.

I do not know your field, the two rooms, or what those panels were actually weighing. Nobody outside has any standing to suggest what you might have said differently, and there is a specific cruelty in implying that better preparation would have converted a final two.

So nothing here reads two near misses as a report on your effort. Scripture never reads a shut door that way, Revelation 3:8, and the Holy Spirit is not the voice going over the interview with you at midnight.

You have not been overlooked by God since March. That was true in the first room and it is true now.

The thing to guard against

And here is the one to watch, because it is the real risk after a second near miss.

The temptation is not despair. It is to stop reaching the final two.

To apply for slightly less. To not put yourself in a room where somebody can look closely again, because being weighed and not chosen twice is a thing a person does not want to arrange a third time.

That is a completely understandable instinct and it will cost you more than either of those two decisions did.

You are not being protected by aiming lower. Scripture says commit thy works unto the Lord, and thy thoughts shall be established, Proverbs 16:3, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing the establishing, so a person does not have to manage their own exposure to disappointment by shrinking.
