Your thumb hovers over Mute while a smiling family fills the screen.
The photograph is beautiful. You mean that.
Two small shoes sit between two larger pairs. Beneath them, one sentence announces a month in the coming year. Friends have already added hearts. Someone writes, Best news ever.
You press mute.
The photograph disappears from the top of your feed. Nothing happens to the family in it. Their joy remains whole. Yet you feel as if you have done something ungenerous.
This is the month you and your spouse decided not to explain.
No update for the people who ask carefully. No cheerful summary for relatives. No sentence beginning, We are still hopeful. You have both used too many words around a longing that has not changed, and for one month you wanted silence.
Then this announcement arrived, and silence felt like failure.
Can you bless someone else's joy without requiring your own heart to stand beneath the announcement and be struck by it again?

Psalm 13 does not explain the wait
David begins with four questions:
How long wilt thou forget me, O Lord? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me? How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily? how long shall mine enemy be exalted over me?Psalm 13:1-2
How long. How long. How long. How long.
Scripture does not correct the repetition. It preserves it.
That matters because long waiting creates repeated language. You have answered the same kind question many times. You have found new ways to say there is no new thing to say. The psalm gives you permission to stop improving the sentence. Scripture holds that ground in Psalm 13:1-6, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it into a room like this one.
It also refuses to explain the delay.
David asks. The psalm does not tell him that the length is building character, arranging timing, testing faith, or preparing a greater testimony. We will not tell you that either. Nothing in this article assigns purpose to your fertility grief. We do not know why this is your road.
The text gives lament, not a theory.
Muting is not cursing
The family in the photograph has not been harmed by your silence.
You did not deny their joy. You changed what your own eyes must carry today.
A boundary is not an attack simply because another person's happiness sits on the other side of it. You can wish them well without watching every update. You can love a friend and decline the front-row seat to a season that presses directly on your ache.
This does not make you bitter.
Bitterness seeks the diminishment of another person's good. Your thumb did not diminish anything. It made one private space where you and your spouse do not have to explain yourselves.
That space is allowed.
You do not owe social brightness as proof that your heart is clean. You do not owe details about your care, decisions, or hopes. Warm and appropriate support around fertility is worthy of honor, and privacy remains yours.
The ending of the psalm
Psalm 13 turns:
But I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation. I will sing unto the Lord, because he hath dealt bountifully with me.Psalm 13:5-6
Do not force the turn to predict a child.
David's trust is in God's mercy and salvation. The psalm does not hand you the outcome you desire or a date by which it arrives. Trust does not become a transaction where correct lament produces pregnancy.
The mercy available now is God's presence inside the unexplained month.
You can trust His heart without claiming knowledge of His answer. You can sing without turning the song into evidence that grief is over. You can remain held while the request remains specific and unanswered.
This is where authority belongs. Jesus gives believers authority to speak to mountains, and that authority is real now. But you do not command a body, a future child, a timeline, or another family. The mountain here is the guilt saying you must expose your wound to prove your love.
Speak to that guilt.
You thought kindness required availability.
If you were truly kind, you would view the post, write the right comment, answer follow-up pictures, and hide whatever happened in your chest. This rests on Scripture in Psalm 13:1-6, and on the Holy Spirit who makes what is written a living thing.
But kindness without truth becomes performance.
This is the turn: you may bless their joy from the quiet side of the mute button.
You do not need to comment today. You do not need to explain your absence. You do not need to unmute on a schedule. If you choose contact later, let it come from freedom rather than guilt.
No child is promised here. No outcome is predicted. Your longing is not being withheld because of insufficient faith, imperfect words, muted announcements, or the need for privacy. Another family's photograph is not a forecast for you, and it is not evidence against you.
However God answers, the outcome is His. A continuing wait does not prove failed faith.
The unexplained month can remain unexplained and still be held by mercy.
Declare this over yourself
Say these words because you are in Christ and Christ is in you. Authority comes from Jesus and His Word, never from controlling a body, timeline, or outcome. You are not commanding a child or promising an answer. However He answers, the outcome is His. Mustard-seed faith can speak to guilt while leaving the longing honestly in God's hands. Scripture already said it in Psalm 13:1-6, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing the work, not the sentence.
- Muted announcement, you are someone else's true joy, but you are not a summons I must answer today. The Word preserves four honest cries of how long, and God does not shame repeated sorrow. I may bless their joy from the quiet side of the mute button.
- Guilt that says privacy makes me bitter and silence makes me unkind, leave now in the name of Jesus. You will not turn my tender heart into a public performance, because mercy meets me without requiring an update. The unexplained month is held even while it remains unexplained.
- Lord Jesus, You know the exact name of what my spouse and I are carrying, and You do not need us to summarize it tonight. I trust Your mercy without pretending to know the outcome, and I place this specific longing in Your hands again. Hold my heart in the quiet, and keep me free from blame while I wait.
