The End of What They Can Offer

She walked you to the door. That is the detail that has stayed, out of a whole afternoon of details.

Not to the corridor. To the door, and she said something warm that was not a formula, and she had clearly done this before and had clearly not become casual about doing it.

There is nothing more they can offer. That was the whole of it, said carefully, and there was no fault in it and nobody was giving up on you and there was nothing to argue with.

You went and sat in the car for a while and then you drove home and put the shopping away.

That was three weeks ago.

What nobody told you about is this part. For four years there was always a next thing. A date, a form, a phone call to make on a Tuesday, a stretch of waiting with a shape to it and a person at the end of it who was working on your behalf.

And now there is a Tuesday with nothing in it.

You keep going to look at the calendar. There is nothing to look at. You have looked at it about eleven times this week, which is what a person does when a habit has outlived the thing it was for.

The verse is about waiting, and it is written in ruins

There is a couplet in Lamentations that arrives in the darkest book in Scripture.

The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him. It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.Lamentations 3:25-26

Read where this sits. Jeremiah has spent an entire chapter describing what has been taken. He is not being brave. He has just finished saying his strength and his hope are perished from the Lord.

And then this, and it is very quiet: it is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait.

Not hope loudly. Not hope with a plan. Quietly wait, which is what a person is left with when the appointments stop.

You are inside the exact verse that was written for a week with nothing in it. I am not putting my own idea over you here. Scripture says the Lord is good unto them that wait for Him, Lamentations 3:25, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries that into a car outside a house three weeks after a woman walked you to a door.

No cause and no fault, and nothing against them

I want to be plain, because you may have had thoughts and possibly a sentence from somebody.

There is no cause to find here. Nothing either of you did. No faith that was weighed and came up short, and nobody is entitled to speculate about any of it. Anyone who has implied otherwise, however gently, was speaking outside Scripture and outside their authority.

And I will not say a word against the people who cared for you. They did real work with real skill for four years and they were kind at the end of it, and that care was God's provision arriving through trained hands, and reaching the end of what medicine can do is not medicine failing you.

And I am not going to promise you a child. Not on this page, not in a song, not in a declaration. That promise is not mine to make.

You are not under a judgement. Scripture is willing to sit inside a loss and never explain it, Lamentations 3:20, and the Holy Spirit does not require an explanation to be accepted before He will be near you.

What the empty Tuesday actually is

Here is what nobody warned you about, and it is worth naming exactly.

For four years, hoping had a container. It had dates in it. Hope was a thing you did by turning up, and turning up is a manageable way to hope, and the calendar carried a great deal of weight that nobody noticed it was carrying.

The container is gone, and the hoping is still there, and it has nowhere to go.

That is why you keep looking at the calendar. Not because you have forgotten. Because your hope is looking for the shape it used to live in.

You have not lost your hope, you have lost its container. Scripture says it is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait, Lamentations 3:26, and the Holy Spirit is the one who teaches a person to hold hope without a date attached to it, which is a slower and harder skill and is not one anybody is born with.

And you are allowed not to know

There will be pressure, some of it internal, to decide what happens now.

Other routes. Other decisions. Big conversations with big words in them, and people who love you will start gently raising them within about a month because they cannot bear the silence.

You do not have to decide anything for a while.

Not this month. Possibly not this year. There is no verse that requires a couple to produce a plan on a schedule, and a decision made in the first three weeks after a door closes is a decision made by two exhausted people.

You are held while you do not know. Scripture says the Lord is good unto them that wait, Lamentations 3:25, and the Holy Spirit does not need a couple to have chosen the next thing before He is willing to sit in the room with them.
