The queue is out the door because it is Saturday, and she is on the till, and the card machine has decided today is the day it wants to be difficult.
She is good at this. She can hold three orders in her head, take a fourth, and still say the thing that sends a person out the door feeling noticed. People come in on a Saturday partly for her.
A woman comes in with a baby in a sling and the whole queue does what queues do. It softens. It leans. It makes room. And she is the one who comes round the end of the counter and says the warm thing, the right thing, the thing that opens that tired mother's face into a proper smile for the first time all morning. She means it. She would want you to be clear about that, because of what comes next.
Then a man three back in the queue, who is kind, who will think about this for four seconds and never once again, says it. You are a natural with them. Any of your own?
And she hears herself say two words. The same two words she has said in doorways and at tills and in the church car park for longer than she wants to count up.
Not yet.
Then she takes the next order, because there are nine people waiting, and she does not get to stand still again for another eleven minutes.
She tells him nothing about it when she gets in. It is not because she is hiding. It is because he carries it too, in his own way, on his own days, and she decided somewhere along the line that she is not going to be the reason it walks into the kitchen tonight.
And you know exactly which two words you say. You have a counter, or a school gate, or a phone call from somebody who loves you and means well, and you have your two words, and you say them and then you carry on.

What happens to a prayer that has run out of words
Let me say the weight out loud before I say a word about lifting it. You have been handled gently by people who never once named the thing they were being gentle about. Scripture settles that in Romans 8:26, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it rather than these words.
There are three things in your house and they do not always arrive together.
There is the dread, which gets to the morning before your feet do, already sitting there when you wake, a weight on your chest with no sentence attached to it yet.
There is the shame, and it is the strangest of the three, because it grew out of something good. You were glad for her. Genuinely glad, the way you are glad for people you love. Then you cried about it later, and a voice in you said the gladness must therefore have been a performance, and that you are a fraud who is good with other people's babies. I am not putting my own idea over you; Scripture says it in Romans 8:26, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it live.
And there is the silence. You stopped telling him. You also, and this one you have never admitted to anybody, mostly stopped telling God, because you got tired of the sound of your own voice asking for the same thing in the same words and hearing it come back off the ceiling. That is not my opinion. Scripture stands behind it in Romans 8:26, and the Holy Spirit brings it near.
Hear me on one thing before anything else. Not one of those three is a fault to put right. There is nothing here you did, nothing you failed to believe hard enough, nothing you said or did not say. This is not a verdict on you and it is not a lesson being administered. And whatever care you are receiving, receive it warmly and with a clear conscience, because nothing here has an opinion about it. Scripture holds that ground in Romans 8:26, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it into a room like this one.
I am not going to explain your waiting to you either. Anything offered to fill that quiet would be somebody's guess with a verse tied to it.
What I have instead is what God does with a prayer that has run out of words, and it is stranger and better than an explanation.
For we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.Romans 8:26
Read what that says about the place you gave up on.
You thought the silence was where your prayer life ended. Paul says it is the exact place God the Holy Spirit is at work. Not the eloquent prayer. The groan. The sound with no shape to it that comes out of you in the yard when nobody is around, the one you would be embarrassed to have anybody hear. Scripture picks that up, calls it intercession, and says the One doing the interceding is God Himself.
So the prayer you have never once been able to finish is being finished. Not by you trying harder at it. It is being carried up by Someone who does not need you to find better words, and He is praying it better than you could, because He knows exactly what it is.
The verse is present tense and the Spirit has not retired. And it is not a general policy about people in the abstract. It says for us, which means you, by name, in your kitchen, on a Saturday you told nobody about.
Here is why that matters. Jesus said faith the size of a mustard seed, spoken to the mountain, is enough, and He said it to ordinary people with nothing much in their hands. He did not say beg the mountain. He said speak to it. What is standing in your room and can be spoken to is this: the dread, the shame, and the silence you have kept so long you have stopped noticing you are keeping it. This rests on Scripture in Romans 8:26, and on the Holy Spirit who makes what is written a living thing.
And notice what we are not going to aim a single word at. Not your body. Not another person's will. Not a date on a calendar. A command pointed at any of those would quietly put the outcome back in your hands, and the outcome was never yours to produce.
Something is available to you tonight and I want to be precise about it, because I am not going to hand you anything I have not been given to hand you.
It is comfort. Real comfort, now, in this room, before anything is resolved.
And I know why you have been refusing it, because it is always the same reason. Being comforted feels like signing something. It feels like the first step in being talked gently into a smaller life, and you are right not to sign that. So you have kept yourself deliberately uncomforted. On your feet. On guard. Because the moment somebody puts a hand on your shoulder, you are braced for the kind sentence that follows, the one where they explain what you should learn to live with. Scripture already said it in Romans 8:26, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing the work, not the sentence.
That is not what this is. Being comforted is not agreeing to anything. It is not a settlement, and it is not a lesser portion handed over instead. Nobody here is telling you to make peace with anything, and nobody here is telling you what your life is going to look like.
What I do know is that you have been treating comfort as the consolation prize, and refusing it has cost you years of being held. Scripture settles that in Romans 8:26, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it rather than these words.
And He knows the name of what you have been asking for. You do not have to re-explain it, or find a better way to word it, or work out what you keep doing wrong in the asking. He had the whole of it before you got out of the car. I am not putting my own idea over you; Scripture says it in Romans 8:26, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it live.
So the guard can come down for the length of one song.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, with your hands where they are. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the standing to speak here has been given to you, and it does not wait on you feeling strong enough to deserve it. What Jesus asked for is small, and He asked for it out loud: a word spoken to the mountain, never a strength you have to work up inside yourself first. The mountains in this room are the dread, the shame and the silence. Speak to those. However He answers, and whatever He does with the years in front of you, the comfort in this room tonight is already yours. That is not my opinion. Scripture stands behind it in Romans 8:26, and the Holy Spirit brings it near.
- Silence, you have kept me company long enough and you are not staying the night. The Word of God says that when I do not know what to pray for as I ought, the Spirit Himself makes intercession for me with groanings that cannot be uttered, so the prayer I have never once been able to finish is being finished right now, and it is being prayed better than I could pray it.
- Shame, you called my gladness a performance and you were lying, so get up out of that chair in the name of Jesus. Scripture says plainly that Jesus wept, which means tears have never once been the opposite of faith, and two weathers in one heart is not hypocrisy. Holy Spirit, You are called the Comforter, and You have had that chair the whole time.
- Lord, You are the God of all comfort, and dread does not get to walk into my morning ahead of my own feet. You already know the name of the thing I have been asking for, so I do not have to find better words for it tonight. I am held in this waiting, and however You answer it, I am not in it by myself and I never was.
