It is in the side pocket of the black bag, in a plastic wallet, because paper curls in a van.
You do not take it out any more. You know what it says. Four years, a thesis on load bearing under thermal cycling, and a stamp from an institute that eleven people in this city have heard of and none of them work in hiring.
Two years of deliveries. You are good at it. You know which streets flood, which buzzers do not work, which houses want the box behind the bin and which ones want it handed over. You have a route and you can run it in your sleep and some weeks you nearly do.
Last Tuesday a man on a doorstep asked you what you did before.
You said, this and that.
That is the moment you have been turning over all week. Not the equivalence board, not the fourteen months of correspondence, not the letter that used the word unfortunately twice in one paragraph. The doorstep. The two seconds where you had a whole answer in your mouth and put it down because you did not have the energy to watch a stranger's face do the thing it does.
The certificate stays in the bag. The van smells of cardboard and rain.

Where promotion actually comes from
There is a psalm that says the quiet part out loud.
For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another.Psalm 75:6-7
Three directions and no fourth. The psalmist lists the compass and comes up short on purpose, because the point of the sentence is that the lifting does not come along any road you can watch.
That is not a promise about a job. Read it carefully: it is a statement about who holds the scales. God is the judge. Not the equivalence board. Not the man on the doorstep whose face does the thing. Not a system that reads four years of work as a foreign stamp and files it.
You are being weighed by God and not by a registration office. I am not putting my own opinion over you. The word says God is the judge, Psalm 75:7, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a sentence like that off a page and sets it down in a van that smells of cardboard.
The two seconds on the doorstep
Let me stay in the moment that actually hurt, because it was not the letter.
You said this and that, and then you drove to the next house, and somewhere between those two things a small thing happened that you have been carrying since. You agreed with him. Not out loud. Inside, in the place where a man decides what he is, you let a stranger's likely reaction rewrite your own answer.
That is what two years of a closed door does. It does not take the qualification. It takes the willingness to say it. Scripture calls a man's worth a thing God set and not a thing a market prices, Psalm 139:14, and the Holy Spirit does not update that figure when a doorstep goes quiet.
Hear me, because this is not a scolding. There is nothing wrong with you for being tired of explaining. A man who has explained his own credentials to fourteen months of correspondence has earned the right to be quiet on a doorstep on a Tuesday.
But the quiet must not be allowed to become a verdict. You are not less than what you trained for. The word says the Lord seeth not as man seeth, for man looketh on the outward appearance but the Lord looketh on the heart, 1 Samuel 16:7, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps that true in a man on a day when nobody asked and nobody would have listened.
What this page will not do
I am not going to give you advice about the search. Not one word.
I do not know your board, your trade, your city, or your paperwork. Anyone who has not sat in that correspondence for fourteen months has no business telling you how to sit in it, and the fastest way to insult a man in your position is to imply that a better approach would have opened the door by now.
So no tips. No suggestion that you have done this wrong. Nothing on this page reads the closed door as a report on your effort, because Scripture never reads a door that way.
What I will do is stand next to the thing that is actually true right now. You have not been overlooked. The word says the Lord's eye is on them that fear Him and hope in His mercy, Psalm 33:18, and the Holy Spirit is present in that van at the same strength He would be in any office that ever declined to read your file.
Provision now, and the door later
There are two separate things and the door being shut has quietly merged them.
There is the work you trained for, which has not arrived. And there is today, which has been provided for, in a way you would probably not have chosen and which has nonetheless fed a household for two years.
I am not going to call the second one the answer to the first. It is not, and it is insulting to pretend it is. Driving a van is not the thesis, and you did not spend four years on load bearing so that a man could tell you God's plan was cardboard.
But God has fed you in these two years, and He did it through your own two hands, and that is not nothing to have been true every single week.
You are provided for while the door is shut. The word says He gives food to all flesh, for His mercy endures for ever, Psalm 136:25, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a man hold that and his disappointment at the same time without either of them being a lie.
You have been letting a system tell you what you are, and a system is not qualified to say.
The thing to put down today is not the certificate. Keep the certificate. Put down the private agreement you made on a doorstep on Tuesday, the one where you decided in advance that the answer was not worth giving. Scripture never authorized that agreement, Psalm 75:7, and the Holy Spirit was not the one who suggested it.
You are the same man in the van that you were in the lecture hall. Scripture says God is the judge who puts down one and sets up another, Psalm 75:7, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps that steady in a man whose file is sitting in an office where nobody is reading it.
Nothing here is a prediction. I do not know whether the board turns, or when, or how. What I know is that no board was ever handed the authority to say what you are, and that the God who is the judge has never once needed a stamp to recognize a man.
So drive the route. Do it well, because you do. And the next time somebody on a doorstep asks what you did before, you may find you have your own answer back, because Scripture gave it to you in Psalm 139:14 and the Holy Spirit has been holding it for you while you were tired.
Declare this over yourself
Speak these as a man standing in Christ, under the will of God, with no date set for Him. Scripture gives the standing and the Holy Spirit carries the words, and the outcome is His, and He may answer in His own way.
- Closed door of this trade, you are a door and not a verdict. Scripture says promotion comes neither from the east nor from the west, and the scales were never in your hands to hold.
- Agreement I made with myself on a doorstep on Tuesday, that the answer was not worth giving, get out of this van in the name of Jesus. Scripture says the Lord looks on the heart and not on the outward appearance, 1 Samuel 16:7, and the Holy Spirit has not filed me under this and that.
- Lord, You are the judge who puts down one and sets up another, and You have never needed a stamp to recognize a man. I am driving the route today with my own answer back in my mouth, and I am leaving the door with You.
