The Third Year of the Appeal

It came on Tuesday and you knew what it was from the envelope, and you still opened it standing up in the hall.

Two paragraphs. The same two paragraphs. Your case remains under consideration. You will be contacted in due course. There is a reference number at the top that you know by heart in a way you have never known a phone number.

Three years.

The first year had a shape. There were forms and there was a deadline and there was a folder, and doing a thing feels like progress even when it is not. The second year had the appeal, which had its own forms, and a person on a phone once who was kind.

The third year has letters like this one.

What it has done to the house is the part nobody outside sees. You do not book anything. Not a week away, not a course, not a dentist more than a month out, because there is a version of the next twelve weeks in which everything changes and you have to be able to move.

So the whole household lives at three weeks' notice, permanently, in the third year of it.

Your daughter asked in the spring whether you could go to her cousin's in the summer, and you said we will see, and she said something you have not been able to shake off. She said, you always say that.

The psalm starts with a long wait and admits it

There is a psalm about deliverance that does not skip the part before it.

I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God.Psalm 40:1-3

The Hebrew at the start is doubled. Waiting, I waited. It is the emphatic form, the way Scripture intensifies by structure rather than by adjectives, and it means something like: I waited, and then I went on waiting.

David does not tidy that up. He does not skip to the rock. He puts the waiting in the first line and makes it the doorway to the whole psalm.

And notice what God does first. Before the pit, before the rock, before the new song: He inclined unto me. He leaned down. That is the first movement in the psalm and it is not a rescue, it is a posture.

You are being leaned toward in the third year. I am not putting my own opinion over you here. Scripture says He inclined unto me and heard my cry, Psalm 40:1, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an inclining God something you can feel in a hallway on a Tuesday.

We are not explaining three years

I will not, and it matters that I say so.

I do not know why this is taking what it is taking. Nobody who tells you quickly is telling you truly, and the people who arrive with a reason for another family's long wait are almost always managing their own discomfort at the sight of it.

Not a season with a purpose you have to accept. Not a lesson. Not discipline. Scripture is willing to say waiting, I waited and leave the reason out of the sentence entirely, Psalm 40:1, and the Holy Spirit does not require a household to have understood a thing before He will be in the hall with them.

You are not being assessed by this process. You are in the third year of an appeal, and God is in the house.

The house at three weeks' notice

Here is the thing that has cost you most, and it is not the decision.

It is that you have been living provisionally. Nothing booked. Nothing planted. Nothing that assumes next August, because assuming next August feels like tempting something.

That was sensible in year one. In year three it has quietly become a way of not being fully alive in your own house, and your daughter put her finger on it in one sentence in the spring without knowing what she had done. Scripture hands out grace for a day at a time and does not hold it back until a matter is resolved, Matthew 6:34, and the Holy Spirit has been giving it for these Tuesdays too.

Hear me carefully, because this is not a rebuke. Nobody chose this. It accumulated.

But there is a difference between holding plans loosely and refusing to make any, and the second one hands a pending decision authority over days it was never given. You have not been asked to put your life in a holding pattern until somebody writes back. Scripture says this is the day which the Lord hath made, we will rejoice and be glad in it, Psalm 118:24, and the Holy Spirit gives grace for a Tuesday in the third year exactly as He gives it for a Tuesday afterwards.

Book the summer. If it has to be canceled, it has to be canceled, and a canceled week is a smaller loss than three years of a family that stopped planning anything.

The reference number and the name

One more thing, quietly.

You know that reference number by heart. That is what happens to people inside a process: they start to experience themselves as a case, because that is how every letter addresses them.

You are not a case. You are a household God knows by name, and He has never once needed a reference to find you. Scripture says fear not, for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name, thou art mine, Isaiah 43:1, and the Holy Spirit does not file a family under a number issued by an office.
