The trolley has one wheel that pulls left, and you have stopped correcting it. You just lean.
Aisle nine. Tinned tomatoes, four facings, labels forward. The radio overhead is playing to nobody. Somewhere past the freezers a machine cycles on, runs for ninety seconds, and cycles off again, and you could set a clock by it because for six years you have.
You were thirty-one when you handed in the notice. You remember the exact weight of the envelope. You remember saying the word called out loud to a manager who was kind about it and did not understand it, and you remember walking to the car park afterwards feeling like a man who had finally stopped arguing with God.
Six years.
Two years of training. Four years of this. Two applications a year, politely answered. One interview that went well and went nowhere. A wife who has never once said the thing you are afraid she is thinking.
At four in the morning the store is honest. There is no one here to tell a hopeful version to. There is a trolley that pulls left, and a shelf, and the arithmetic that keeps running underneath everything, which is that you gave up something real for something that has not appeared.
You lean into the trolley and push it to aisle ten.

What Paul buried, and what he did not
There is a sentence of Paul's that people quote about money, and it is not about money.
Thou fool, that which thou sowest is not quickened, except it die: And that which thou sowest, thou sowest not that body that shall be, but bare grain, it may chance of wheat, or of some other grain: But God giveth it a body as it hath pleased him, and to every seed his own body.1 Corinthians 15:36-38
He is arguing about resurrection. Someone has asked him how the dead are raised and with what body they come, and Paul reaches for the plainest thing in the world: a grain goes into the ground and looks like nothing, and what comes up is not the grain.
Nobody in that passage is giving anything to get anything. Paul is standing over a burial.
That distinction matters this morning, because the thing you are carrying is not an investment that has underperformed. You are not a man waiting for a return. I am not putting my own idea over you here. The word says God gives the grain its own body as it has pleased Him, 1 Corinthians 15:38, and it is the Holy Spirit, not a sentence of mine, who carries that into an aisle at four in the morning where nobody else is standing.
A return has to be earned. A body is given.
The six years are not an audit
Here is where the mind goes when the store is quiet, and it goes there because it is tired and not because it is faithless.
It goes: if this were real, something would have shown by now. Six years is long enough. Somebody would have called. A door would have opened. The absence of evidence has begun to feel like the presence of a verdict.
Turn that over and look at what it assumes. It assumes God works on a schedule you can audit from the outside, and that visible movement is the only proof of life. Neither of those is in the text. The man in the parable of Mark 4 sleeps and rises, night and day, and the seed springs and grows up, and he does not know how. Not knowing how is the normal condition, not the failure state.
You are not being assessed. Scripture does not hand the waiting man a scorecard, and the Holy Spirit does not audit a person by their visible output. There is no line in the word where God measures a servant by how quickly the work arrived.
So the six years are not a report card. They are six years.
That is not a small thing to say. It is not nothing to have spent them. But it is a different thing from having failed them, and the difference is the whole weight of what you carry into the car park at six.
The calling and the appointment are two different things
A calling is what God puts in a person. An appointment is a room, a title, a rota, a letter.
Most of what hurts here is the gap between those two, and most of what confuses a person is treating them as one thing. If they are one thing, then no appointment means no calling, and six years without a letter means six years of being wrong about God.
They are not one thing.
Joseph carried the dream in a prison. Moses carried the deliverance while herding another man's sheep for forty years. David was anointed king and went back to the flock, and then to a harp, and then to a cave. In every case the calling was in the man long before any room had his name on the door.
You have the thing itself. I am not speaking my own encouragement over you; the word says the gifts and calling of God are without repentance, Romans 11:29, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put it in you and has not withdrawn it because a rota has not appeared.
What you do not have is the appointment. That is real, and I am not going to talk you out of feeling it. But you are not empty-handed at four in the morning. You are a man carrying something that has not yet been given a room.
The shelf is not a punishment
One more thing the quiet says: that this work is what you were given instead. Hold that sentence up against the word for a second, because Scripture never once files a servant under instead, and the Holy Spirit does not keep a lesser file on a man who works nights.
Instead is the cruel word in that sentence, and it does not belong there. Six years of night shifts have made you a man who knows what it is to be tired, to be invisible, to be spoken past by day staff, to hold a marriage together on opposite sleep patterns. There is no seminar that teaches that. There is no room where it is not useful.
I am not going to tell you God arranged this to teach you a lesson. I do not know that, and neither does anyone else, and the people who say it fastest have usually never done a night shift. The category of why is closed to us here.
But the category of what is true right now is wide open. You are already known by God in aisle nine. The word says the Lord looks on the heart and not on what a man appears to be, 1 Samuel 16:7, and the Holy Spirit is present with you between the freezers at the same strength He would be present in any pulpit you have ever imagined.
There is not a lesser version of God's presence for a lesser room.
You have been reading the six years as an answer. They are not an answer. They are a duration.
The switch you can flip this morning is not a prediction. It is a refusal to let an empty aisle sign a verdict it has no authority to sign. Nothing about a night shift can tell you what God has buried in you, because a night shift cannot see under the ground and neither can you. The word says His word does not return to Him empty, Isaiah 55:11, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps it living where nobody is looking.
You are held while nothing shows. That is not me being kind to you. The word says the Lord upholds the man whose steps He orders, and though he fall he shall not be utterly cast down, Psalm 37:23-24, and the Holy Spirit is the one holding, not your ability to keep believing at four in the morning when the machine cycles on.
So push the trolley to aisle ten. Do the facings. Go home and sleep.
And stop letting the shelf tell you what you are. Scripture already told you what you are, and the Holy Spirit has been saying it over you in this aisle for six years while you listened to the freezers instead.
Declare this over yourself
Speak these as a man standing in Christ, under the will of God, and not as a man setting a date for Him. Scripture gives the standing and the Holy Spirit carries the words; He may answer in a way you did not plan for, and the outcome is His, and He may answer in His own way.
- Empty aisle at four in the morning, you are not the verdict on my life. Scripture says God gives the grain its own body as it has pleased Him, and what He buried in me is His to raise and not yours to bury again.
- Conclusion I came to in the fourth year, that I mistook my own wanting for God's voice, get out of this store in the name of Jesus. Scripture says the gifts and calling of God are without repentance, and the Holy Spirit who put this in me has not once reached back in to take it out.
- Lord, You are the God who gives the body as it pleases You, and You are present here between the freezers as fully as anywhere I have imagined standing. I am done auditing You by what I can see, and I am opening my hands.
